CFP: AI and Fandom
Unfortunately, this special issue will not be moving forward. All submitted pieces are being considered for our general issue.
Due in part to well-publicised advancements in generative AI technologies such as GPT-4, there has been a recent explosion of interest in – and hype around – Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. Whether this hype cycle continues to grow or fades away, AI is anticipated to have significant repercussions for fandom (Lamerichs 2018), and is already inspiring polarised reactions. Fan artists have been candid about using creative AI tools like Midjourney and DALL-E to generate fan art, while fanfiction writers have been using ChatGPT to generate stories and share them online (there are 470 works citing the use of these tools on AO3 and 20 on FanFiction.net at the time of writing). It is likely the case that even greater numbers of fans are using such tools discreetly, to the consternation of those for whom this is a disruption of the norms and values of fan production and wider artistic creation (Cain 2023; shealwaysreads 2023). AI technology is being used to dub movies with matching visual mouth movements after filming has been completed (Contreras 2022), to analyse audience responses in real-time (Pringle 2017), to holographically revive deceased performers (Andrews 2022; Contreras 2023), to build chatbots where users can interact with a synthesised version of celebrities and fictional characters (Rosenberg 2023), to synthesise celebrities’ voices (Kang et al. 2022; Nyce 2023), and for translation services for transnational fandoms (Kim 2021).
Despite the multiple ways in which AI is being introduced for practical implementations, the term remains a contested one. Lindley et al (2020) consider “how AI simultaneously refers to the grand vision of creating a machine with human-level general intelligence as well as describing a range of real technologies which are in widespread use today” (2) and suggest that this so called ‘definitional dualism’ can obscure the ubiquity of current implementations while stoking concerns about far-future speculations based on media portrayals. AI is touted as being at least as world-changing as the mass adoption of the internet and, regardless of whether it proves to be such a paradigm shift, the strong emotions it generates make it a productive site of intervention into long-held debates about: relationships between technology and art, what it means to create, what it means to be human, and the legislative and ethical frameworks that seek to determine these relationships.
This special issue seeks to address the rapidly accelerating topic of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning (ML) systems (including, but not limited to Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Large Language Models (LLMs), Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and speech, image and audio recognition and generation), and their relationship to and implications for fans and fan studies. We are interested in how fans are using AI tools in novel ways as well as how fans feel about the use of these tools. From media production and marketing perspectives we are interested in how AI tools are being used to study fans, and to create new media artefacts that attract fan attention. The use of AI to generate transformative works challenges ideas around creativity, originality and authorship (Clarke 2022; Miller 2019; Ploin et al. 2022), debates that are prevalent in fan studies and beyond. AI-generated transformative works may present challenges to existing legal frameworks, such as copyright, as well as to ethical frameworks and fan gift economy norms. For example, OpenAI scraped large swathes of the internet to train its models – most likely including fan works (Leishman 2022). This is in addition to larger issues with AI, such as the potential discrimination and bias that can arise from the use of ‘normalised’ (exclusionary) training data (Noble 2018). We are also interested in fan engagement with fictional or speculative AI in literature, media and culture.
We welcome contributions from scholars who are familiar with AI technologies as well as from scholars who seek to understand its repercussions for fans, fan works, fan communities and fan studies. We anticipate submissions from those working in disparate disciplines as well as interdisciplinary research that operates across multiple fields.
The following are some suggested topics that submissions might consider:
The use of generative AI by fans to create new forms of transformative work (for example, replicating actors’ voices to ‘read’ podfic)
Fan responses to the development and use of AI including Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT (for example, concerns that AO3 may be part of the data scraped for training models)
Explorations of copyright, ownership and authorship in the age of AI-generated material and transformative works
Studies that examine fandoms centring on speculative AI and androids, (e.g. Her, Isaac Asimov, WestWorld, Star Trek)
Methods for fan studies research that use AI and ML
The use of AI in audience research and content development by media producers and studios
Lessons that scholars of AI and its development can learn from fan studies and vice versa
Ethics of AI in a fan context, for example deepfakes and the spread of misinformation

Are your project managers ready for AI?
Tumblr media
Artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant progress in recent years, with advancements in many areas, including:  ● Generative AI  ● Machine learning ● Facial recognition ● Financial systems ● Customer service ● Medical diagnostics The global AI market is expected to grow from over $196 billion in 2024 to $1.8 trillion by 2030 and a large number of people have been trained and plenty of AI tools have been created covering various areas.  As a project manager, you might want to know how AI can help project management and where to start.
Where to start
People and data are generally the right place to start for project management AI.
Tumblr media
People
No new way of doing things has absolutely no risk and people making things happen or not happen, therefore, upgrading your project managers is the first thing that you must do.   Your project managers might use the excuse that AI tools are not mature enough for project managers, but keep in mind that they can say the same thing 10 years later since no tools are perfect.  If your project managers really have the mindset of leveraging modern technology to advance the effectiveness in their environment, they will study various ways to leverage Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and AI to get ahead of your competitors.  And they will come to the realization that the readiness of data is important before the application of AI tools.
Data
As a matter of fact, any AI adoption process for project management starts with data.  Training AI algorithms to manage projects will require large amounts of project-related data. Your organization may retain troves of historical project data, but they are likely to be stored in thousands of documents in a variety of file formats scattered around different systems. The information could be out-of-date, might use different taxonomies, or contain outliers and gaps. Roughly 80% of the time spent preparing a machine learning (ML) algorithm for use is focused on data gathering and cleaning, which takes raw and unstructured data and transforms it into structured data that can train a machine learning model.  Without available and properly managed data, the AI transformation will unlikely happen at your organization.
Leveraging a fully a digitized platform
Tumblr media
A fully digitized platform connects people and businesses through online interactions and transactions. A fully digitized platform can be used for a variety of purposes, including: ● Project management: Managing project planning and real-time project execution ● Business operations: Streamlining workflows and IT systems, and standardizing business processes ● Customer engagement: Serving customers, and creating intelligence to improve operations ● Product development: Developing and launching products ● Data analytics: Equipping employees with data, analytics, and insights ● Connecting buyers and sellers: Moving business interactions online, and collecting and interpreting data to adjust prices in real time   Your project managers need to make an accurate inventory of all your projects and export them to a fully digitized platform.  Your project managers absolutely can manually clean and convert all the project data to digital but the efforts can be huge, tedious and time consuming, especially for large projects involving procurement, subcontracting and outsourcing.  Contact us if you need recommendation on fully digitized platforms.
Selecting the AI tools
For project management, you mainly need predict AI tools.  Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT might not fit your needs.  You should have your teams to research and select the right AI tools such as below for your situation: ● Linear Regression ● Polynomial Regression ● Decision Tree ● Random Forest ● XGBoost ● K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) ● Support Vector Machines (SVM) ● Neural networks
Creating a roadmap
Creating a roadmap is important for your AI implementation because it provides a visual plan that helps ensure a project is successful.  The following is a sample roadmap:
Tumblr media
The roadmap defined by you and your teams will provide you the following benefits: Clarity -- A roadmap outlines the projects goals, timeline, and milestones, which helps keep everyone aligned.  Communication -- A roadmap provides a common reference point for discussing the projects status and changes.  Prioritization -- A roadmap helps identify which tasks are most important and need to be completed first.  Accountability -- A roadmap helps stakeholders track progress and ensure the project meets its goals.  Risk identification -- A roadmap helps identify potential challenges and delays early in the project.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

RPA Project: Mapping the Process
Tumblr media
In the fast-paced world of automation, organizations are increasingly turning to Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to streamline operations and enhance productivity. One crucial aspect of any RPA implementation is process mapping. In this blog, we will delve into the significance of RPA Project: Mapping the Process and provide you with practical insights on how to effectively map processes for automation.
Understanding RPA and Its Benefits
Before we dive into the details of process mapping, let’s quickly explore what RPA is and why it’s gaining traction in various industries. RPA refers to the technology that enables organizations to automate routine tasks using software robots. These robots can mimic human actions and interact with applications just like a person would. By automating repetitive tasks, businesses can achieve several benefits:
Increased Efficiency: Robots can work 24/7 without breaks, leading to faster task completion.
Cost Savings: Automation reduces the need for human intervention, lowering operational costs.
Enhanced Accuracy: Bots eliminate the risk of human error, ensuring tasks are performed consistently.
Improved Compliance: Automated processes can be programmed to adhere to regulations, reducing the risk of compliance issues.
Why Process Mapping is Essential
Process mapping is the first step in any RPA project. It involves visualizing and documenting the current workflow to identify areas suitable for automation. Here’s why it’s essential:
Clarity and Understanding: Mapping processes provides a clear picture of how tasks are currently performed. This understanding is crucial for identifying inefficiencies and bottlenecks.
Identifying Automation Opportunities: Not every task is suitable for automation. By analyzing the mapped processes, organizations can determine which tasks can be effectively automated and which should remain manual.
Stakeholder Communication: A well-documented process map serves as a communication tool among stakeholders. It ensures everyone is on the same page regarding the current workflow and proposed changes.
Change Management: Implementing RPA often requires changes in the existing processes. Having a clear map allows for smoother transitions and helps in training staff on new workflows.
Continuous Improvement: Process mapping isn’t a one-time activity. It enables organizations to continuously assess and improve their workflows, leading to ongoing efficiencies.
Steps to Map Processes for RPA
1. Define the Scope of the Project
Before you start mapping, it’s essential to define the scope of your RPA project. Identify the specific processes you want to automate and outline the goals you hope to achieve. Consider the following questions:
What are the current pain points in the existing process?
What are the expected outcomes of the automation?
Who are the stakeholders involved in this process?
2. Gather Information
Once you’ve defined the scope, gather information about the existing processes. This step may involve interviewing employees, reviewing documentation, and observing the processes in action. The goal is to collect as much data as possible to understand how the current workflow operates.
3. Choose the Right Mapping Tools
Selecting the right tools for process mapping is crucial. There are various software options available, ranging from simple diagramming tools to specialized process mapping software. Popular choices include:
Visio: A versatile tool for creating flowcharts and diagrams.
Lucidchart: An online tool that allows for easy collaboration.
Bizagi Modeler: A free tool specifically designed for process modeling.
Choose a tool that fits your team’s needs and is easy to use.
4. Create the Process Map
Now it’s time to create the process map. Start by laying out the steps involved in the current process. Use standard symbols for process mapping, such as ovals for start and end points, rectangles for processes, and diamonds for decision points. Ensure the map flows logically and clearly illustrates the workflow.
5. Validate the Process Map
Once you’ve created the initial map, it’s essential to validate it with stakeholders. Share the map with team members involved in the process and gather feedback. They may provide valuable insights and identify areas that need adjustments.
6. Identify Automation Opportunities
With a validated process map in hand, analyze the workflow to identify automation opportunities. Look for repetitive tasks that consume a significant amount of time and resources. Consider the following factors when assessing tasks for automation:
Volume: How often is the task performed?
Complexity: Is the task straightforward, or does it require human judgment?
Variability: Is the task consistent, or does it vary significantly?
By focusing on tasks that are high-volume and low-complexity, you can maximize the benefits of automation.
7. Design the Future State Process
After identifying tasks for automation, design the future state process. This is where you outline how the automated workflow will look. Consider the changes in roles and responsibilities and how the new process will integrate with existing systems. It’s essential to communicate these changes to all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition.
8. Implement and Monitor
With the future state process designed, it’s time to implement the automation. Work closely with your IT team and RPA developers to ensure the automation is set up correctly.
